A Few Words About Reata Ranch

We are a working sheep and cattle ranch in southwestern Colorado. We strive daily for the noble cause of feeding and clothing our nation and the world while being responsible stewards of the land, and creating water, food, and habitat for wildlife, and beautiful scenery for all to enjoy.  We also offer high-country horseback riding and camping experiences. We also train horses and horse owners to help create a safer and more happy, relaxed, and fun-filled relationship. We pride ourselves in the rich culture, history, and uniqueness of our family-owned sheep, cattle, and horses business that is now into it’s 5th generation!  Jakey Brown originally bought a herd of sheep and raised sheep and cattle in the Durango, Colorado area in the mid-1900’s.  His grandson, J. Paul Brown (initial “J” stands for Jakey), life-time rancher and former Colorado State Representative, his wife, Debbie, and their children and grandchildren, including the most recent grandson addition, Jakey Brown (1 year old), who is the original Jakey’s great-great grandson, continue that legacy.  What a joy it is for our family to continue this tradition so we and all those whom this ranch positively affects can continue to reap the rich rewards it provides.

Reata Ranch – An Experience of a Lifetime.

We are a 5th-generation working sheep and cattle ranch.

For over 60 years, we’ve been raising sheep and cattle in southwestern Colorado, and we pride ourselves in our clean, green products we provide. We also understand the uniqueness of our ranch.

With many ranches turning to modernization, utilizing ATVs and high-tech equipment and feeding systems, we offer a unique look into an Old-West style ranching operation that helps display our Western heritage and way of life. Read further about what it’s like at Reata Ranch…

Our Team

Ranchers and Employees
Ranchers and Employees
J.Paul and Debbie Brown and Luke and Stacy Brown own and operate this beautiful ranch. Employees include herders such as Jon and Larson and ranch hands such as James and Alex. While many herders and ranch hands come and go, these have been some of our most helpful and loyal employees.
Family
Family
Without the help of family, the ranch would not be what it is today. While Luke and Stacy are J.Paul and Debbie’s son and daughter-in-law, they also have 5 children together, who from time to time get to help out on the ranch too. Other children, grandchildren, cousins, nephews and nieces, and brothers visit the ranch and are a part of it as well.
Sheep
Sheep
Sheep have been the mainstay of Reata Ranch for 60 years. They have paid for the land, water, and business operations since the beginning. They are the integral part of what we have created at Reata Ranch.
Dogs
Dogs
Guard dogs have saved thousands of sheep over the years, and without them, the number of coyotes, mountain lions, and bear would kill so many sheep, Reata Ranch would go out of business. Guard dogs have saved our ranch, and they continue to be necessary to our operation.
Cattle
Cattle
Cattle have been, in the past, a small portion of what we do at Reata Ranch. They are becoming, again, an integral part of the ranch, and we will continue to produce food in the form of beef for this nation and the world.
Horses
Horses
Horses continue to be necessary for the operation of Reata Ranch, especially during the summer months when sheep and cattle roam high on Colorado mountain peaks and meadows. Horses carry sheep and cattle herders daily and carry ranch hands and owners up mountain trails to bring supplies to these remote areas. Horse training by Reata Horsemanship not only provides well-trained horses for Reata Ranch, we also train horses and horse owners to have safer, more fun-filled relationships.
